The Last Stand

The last stand series looks at the final stage of glacial breakdown. The last stand. Thousands of years paralysed in the ice mass compacted under the weight of fresh snow blankets, 20 meters of snow compresses down to create 1cm of glacial ice, a similar density to rock. Finally being broken down to these ice blocks laying restless on the black sand. Blasted by Atlantic waves some lay stronger than others, thrown back and forth with each new hit they break down to diamond pebbles. I wanted to capture the last stand. The last position on earth before being eternally broken down into it’s final state. Composing this with a planetary aesthetic of the mass against the void, these last pieces live in isolated existence seemingly perched in space. A small piece of a bigger picture of survival. Through illumination one can see the history of it’s existence, thousand year old fragments of dirt, rock and air pockets locked in place. Provoking thought towards our scale and the scale of our planets existence.

“A man who keeps company with glaciers comes to feel tolerably insignificant by and by.”

Mark Twain
